Our protagonist puts away his sheild and takes something else out. Is this a weapon? What does it do?

I wanted to try to make his sheild capable to retracting in a logical way as it must have some thickness to deflect sword and arrow attacks. It still has to fit under his sleeve though.

I might reconsider where and how this character stores this particular invention.
